A Few Tips For Candle Magick

Candles are used in various rituals; they are one of the main necessary tools for magick because of the energy and meaning they bring to the table. For more information on a candle’s uses, and symbolism, head back to the main menu. For a little more on the theories of candle magick, have a look at the Introduction. In this area, you’ll find out a little bit more about burning candles, and how to do it “properly”. Some peope say there’s no wrong way to burn a candle, others believe it is an exact, magickal science, when it comes to candle burning. I tend to lean toward the middle; respectful, and traditional, without being overly anal. Here are a few tips from both sides of the coin.

Extinguishing:

Extinguishing candles should be done respectfully, according to some practitioners, because it is a source of energy that is offered to the goddess, or god that you serve. So instead of blowing a candle out, instead, lick your thumb and forefinger and put the candle out that way. Or, if you’re not sure you want to risk burning yourself, use an actual candle snuffer, –though a spoon is a cheap and readily available alternative.

Burning:

Many practitioners love to start out using expensive altar cloths, –while others just ‘end up’ using expensive altar cloths. Either way, a little splurging for your magick is fine. What isn’t fine is when you end up ruining an expensive altar cloth because you burned a candle on it. Wax drips down, and colored wax can stain. Use small terracotta plates instead, with spirit circles or pentagrams painted on the bottom.

For an extra boost in drawing in the power of the circ le, and creating the atmosphere of unity in all beings, use the symbol of the Uroborus in your candles. Just take a pin, and carefully draw the shape on the side of each of your candles.
